Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue class. It acts as an agonist at the ghrelin receptor, also called the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a. The compound was designed in the 1990s during a search for agents that release growth hormone with fewer off-target hormonal effects than earlier secretagogues. It appears in the research literature under several sequence-based names. Material supplied for laboratory work is normally a lyophilized solid, and it is not marketed as an approved therapeutic in major jurisdictions.
The molecule contains five residues, including alpha-aminoisobutyric acid, D-2-naphthylalanine, and D-phenylalanine, and it ends in a lysine amide. Non-natural and D-configured residues make the chain less susceptible to common peptidases, which helps explain its resistance to rapid breakdown. Its molecular formula is C38H49N9O5, corresponding to a free-base mass near 711.9 daltons. The C-terminal amide removes a negative charge and is a recurring feature in receptor-active peptides of this family. These structural choices are usually discussed as the basis for its selectivity profile.
The lyophilised solid is normally held at -20 °C or colder, shielded from light and moisture. Stability in that state is measured in years, although shelf life depends on residual water content and the container seal. Once dissolved, the peptide is more fragile: aqueous solutions are commonly kept at 2-8 °C and used within days to weeks, and repeated freeze-thaw cycling is avoided. Strongly acidic or basic conditions accelerate hydrolysis, and prolonged exposure to them can strip the terminal amide.
Purity assessment for this peptide relies mainly on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. A C18 column with a water-acetonitrile gradient containing trifluoroacetic acid separates the target from truncated sequences and oxidation products. Detection near 214 nm exploits the amide backbone, while the aromatic side chains allow additional monitoring close to 280 nm. Reported purity values depend on the method, so a certificate of analysis carries weight only when gradient, column and integration parameters are given.
Mass spectrometry confirms identity and reveals structural deviations that chromatography alone can miss. Positive-mode electrospray ionisation generally yields multiply charged ions whose deconvoluted mass is checked against the theoretical value. Amino acid analysis, and enzymatic digestion with subsequent fragment mapping, provide independent confirmation of sequence and of the terminal amide. Analysts take care to separate the target from deletion sequences, which may differ by one residue and therefore by only a small mass increment.

Storage recommendations for the dry solid center on low temperature and low moisture, most often -20 °C in a sealed, desiccated container protected from light. Solutions are less stable than the powder and are usually kept cold and used within a short window. Freeze-thaw cycling is a recognized source of loss, and aliquoting before freezing is a standard precaution. These practices derive from general peptide handling principles rather than from a single published stability trial, so exact shelf lives should be treated as approximate.
Analytical confirmation relies on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often coupled to mass spectrometry for identity and purity assessment. Mass spectrometry distinguishes the intact molecule from truncation products and from oxidation or deamidation variants that share similar chromatographic retention. Immunoassays appear in some biological studies but can cross-react with related peptides, so they are weaker tools for identity work. Reported purity figures depend heavily on the gradient, detector, and integration method used, which complicates direct comparison between laboratories.
(For proof see Lagrange multipliers.) This is a set of (m + k) equations in (m + k) unknowns (the Nj and the λi) and may, therefore, be solved for the equilibrium concentrations Nj as long as the chemical activities are known as functions of the concentrations at the given temperature and pressure. (In the ideal case, activities are proportional to concentrations.) (See Thermodynamic databases for pure substances.) Note that the second equation is just the initial constraints for minimization. This method of calculating equilibrium chemical concentrations is useful for systems with a large number of different molecules. The use of k atomic element conservation equations for the mass constraint is straightforward, and replaces the use of the stoichiometric coefficient equations. The results are consistent with those specified by chemical equations. For example, if equilibrium is specified by a single chemical equation:,
=== Advanced tools === By around 200,000 BP, Middle Paleolithic stone tool manufacturing spawned a tool-making technique known as the prepared-core technique, which was more elaborate than previous Acheulean techniques. This technique increased efficiency by allowing the creation of more controlled and consistent flakes. It allowed Middle Paleolithic humans to create stone-tipped spears, which were the earliest composite tools, by hafting sharp pointy stone flakes onto wooden shafts. In addition to improving tool-making methods, the Middle Paleolithic also saw an improvement of the tools themselves that allowed access to a wider variety and amount of food sources. For example, microliths or small stone tools or points were invented around 70,000–65,000 BP and were essential to the invention of bows and atlatls (spear throwers) in the following Upper Paleolithic. Harpoons were invented and used for the first time during the late Middle Paleolithic (c. 90,000 BP); the invention of these devices brought fish into the human diets, which provided a hedge against starvation and a more abundant food supply. Thanks to their technology and their advanced social structures, Paleolithic groups such as the Neanderthals—who had a Middle Paleolithic level of technology—appear to have hunted large game just as well as Upper Paleolithic modern humans, and the Neanderthals in particular may have likewise hunted with projectile weapons.

=== Denaturing ribonucleases === 2-Mercaptoethanol is used in some RNA isolation procedures to eliminate ribonuclease released during cell lysis. Numerous disulfide bonds make ribonucleases very stable enzymes, so 2-mercaptoethanol is used to reduce these disulfide bonds and irreversibly denature the proteins. This prevents them from digesting the RNA during its extraction procedure.
Hypertrichosis (hirsutism) produces a long, thick, wavy coat that often has delayed shedding or fails to shed completely, and may lighten in color. Hirsutism has been suggested to be pathognomonic for PPID, with up to 95% of horses having PPID. Laminitis Increased drinking and increased urination Pot-bellied appearance Weight loss Redistribution of fat, leading to bulging supraorbital fat pad, a "cresty" neck, and fat over the tail head or in the sheath of males Lethargy Behavioral changes, often an increased docility Muscle wasting, especially along the top line Increased sweating, or less commonly, decreased sweating Increased appetite Decreased sensitivity to pain Recurrent infections due to immune impairment Rarely neurologic signs such as narcolepsy, blindness, or seizures Suspensary ligament degeneration

It has been described as a plenum or a field, a conceptualization that opposed Democritus' atomistic ontology. It is maintained that the Aristotelian concept should not be understood as a "stuff" since there is, for example, hyle that is intellectual as well as sensible hyle found in the body. For Aristotle, hyle is composed of four elements – fire, water, air, and earth – but these were not considered pure substances since matter and form exist in a combination of hot, moist, dry, and cold so that everything is united to form the elements. Aristotle defines matter as "that out of which" something is made. For example, letters are the matter of syllables. Thus, "matter" is a relative term: an object counts as matter relative to something else. For example, clay is matter relative to a brick because a brick is made of clay, whereas bricks are matter relative to a brick house. Change is analyzed as a material transformation: matter is what undergoes a change of form. For example, consider a lump of bronze that's shaped into a statue. Bronze is the matter, and this matter loses one form (morphe) (that of a lump) and gains a new form (that of a statue). According to Aristotle's theory of perception, we perceive an object by receiving its form (eidos) with our sense organs. Thus, forms include complex qualia such as colors, textures, and flavors, not just shapes.
With the exception of the Nautilidae and the species of octopus belonging to the suborder Cirrina, all known cephalopods have an ink sac, which can be used to expel a cloud of dark ink to confuse predators. This sac is a muscular bag which originated as an extension of the hindgut. It lies beneath the gut and opens into the anus, into which its contents – almost pure melanin – can be squirted; its proximity to the base of the funnel means the ink can be distributed by ejected water as the cephalopod uses its jet propulsion. The ejected cloud of melanin is usually mixed, upon expulsion, with mucus, produced elsewhere in the mantle, and therefore forms a thick cloud, resulting in visual (and possibly chemosensory) impairment of the predator, like a smokescreen. However, a more sophisticated behavior has been observed, in which the cephalopod releases a cloud, with a greater mucus content, that approximately resembles the cephalopod that released it (this decoy is referred to as a pseudomorph). This strategy often results in the predator attacking the pseudomorph, rather than its rapidly departing prey. For more information, see Inking behaviors. The ink sac of cephalopods has led to a common name of "inkfish", formerly the pen-and-ink fish.
== Education == The prevalence of stepfamilies has increased over the past century with the increase of divorce and remarriage. According to the Step Family Foundation, "over 50% of US families are remarried or recoupled." These families are unique in their experiences facing many challenges which first-married families do not. For example, role ambiguity, dealing with stepchildren, and ex-spouses are only a few of the issues which are unique to these families. In response to these families' desire for assistance, stepfamily education has become an increasingly common topic among scholars and educators. Although still a relatively new facet within the marriage education realm, stepfamily education provides important information which may not be addressed in traditional marriage or relationship education curriculum. As discussed by Adler-Baeder and Higginbotham (2004) a number of curricula are currently available to stepfamilies and family life educators; however, further research is needed in order to determine best practices for the field. One way in which this gap is being filled is through the current implementation of Healthy Marriage Demonstration Grants in the U.S. As part of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, grants for healthy marriage and responsible fatherhood, which include at-risk and diverse populations such as stepfamilies, are providing important information on the evaluation of stepfamily programs and their effectiveness in servicing stepfamilies.
== Localization == As a GPI-anchored protein, Thy-1 is present in the outer leaflet of lipid rafts in the cell membrane. In case of neurons it is known to be expressed strongly in the mature axon. The axon hillock can act as a barrier for its lateral spread even though it has no transmembrane segment. Thy-1 has been suggested to interact with G inhibitory proteins, the Src family kinase (SFK) member c-fyn, and tubulin within lipid rafts. In rats and mice, Thy-1 protein is present on the soma (cell body) and dendrites of neurons but is not expressed on axons until axonal growth is complete, and is again temporarily suppressed during axonal injury. HIV-1 Matrix co-localizes with Thy-1 in lipid rafts, the site of virus particle budding from cells, and Thy-1 is incorporated into virus particles as a result of this process.

== Historical cases of contamination with diethylene glycol == On 4 May 2007, the FDA advised all U.S. makers of medicines to test all batches of glycerol for diethylene glycol contamination. This followed an occurrence of hundreds of fatal poisonings in Panama resulting from a falsified import customs declaration by Panamanian import/export firm Aduanas Javier de Gracia Express, S. A. The cheaper diethylene glycol was relabeled as the more expensive glycerol. Between 1990 and 1998, incidents of DEG poisoning reportedly occurred in Argentina, Bangladesh, India, and Nigeria, and resulted in hundreds of deaths. In 1937, more than one hundred people died in the United States after ingesting DEG-contaminated elixir sulfanilamide, a drug used to treat infections.
Products that have a minor contribution to revenues include Insulin lispro (Humalog), a modified type of medical insulin; ramucirumab (Cyramza), a fully human monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of cancer; baricitinib (Olumiant), an immunomodulatory medication used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, alopecia areata, and COVID-19; insulin (Humulin) to treat high blood glucose; and galcanezumab (Emgality), a humanized monoclonal antibody used for the prevention of migraines. In 2024, 67% of the company's revenues came from the United States, 18% came from Europe, 3% came from Japan, and 3% came from China. Lilly was the first company to mass-produce both the polio vaccine, developed in 1955 by Jonas Salk, and insulin. It was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to produce human insulin using recombinant DNA, including Humulin (insulin medication), Humalog (insulin lispro), and the first approved biosimilar insulin product in the US, Basaglar (insulin glargine). It achieved commercial success with major depressive disorder drugs Prozac (fluoxetine) (1986), Cymbalta (duloxetine) (2004), and its antipsychotic medication Zyprexa (olanzapine) (1996), all of which are now off patent and are manufactured by others as generic drugs. In 2005, Lilly brought exenatide to market—the first of the GLP-1 receptor agonists—followed by the GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide). The Lilly Endowment, a charitable foundation organized in 1937 by the founding family, owns 9.8% of the company.

It has not been approved as a therapeutic by major regulators, and the human trial record is small and dated. Material available today is mostly sold as a research chemical for laboratory use. Approval and restriction status varies by country.
It binds the ghrelin receptor, known as the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a. Activation of that receptor triggers signaling that leads to growth hormone release. Selectivity for growth hormone over cortisol and prolactin is the property most often cited for this compound.
Published estimates place the circulating half-life at roughly two hours in humans. Clearance involves peptidase activity and renal handling. Because the peptide is short-lived, release patterns after administration are usually described as pulsatile rather than sustained.
Results are most often expressed as a percentage of total peak area from a reversed-phase separation. That figure reflects the detection wavelength, gradient and integration choices used by the laboratory. Two valid certificates can therefore quote different values for the same material without either being incorrect.
